Oregon Student Leaders Host National Signing Day
Following the success of signing 100% of the 2014 class, Oregon Hygiene & Science University (OHSU) student leaders and Oregon Dental Association (ODA) staff aimed for a repeat success this year. Armed with the launch of the recent Molar Movement, ODA staff and volunteers were excited to participate and spend time with the OHSU Class of 2015. The Molar Movement fosters unity of the profession in both voice and action within the Oregon dental community. Represented by scarves with the phrase "Fight Enamel Cruelty" encapsulated by two “Molar Bears”, the ODA has generated a great deal of chatter amongst dental students, members, and the national dental community in a short amount of time. Set out to reach their goal of 100% signing, the ODA offered a Molar Movement scarf to fourth year students who completed a membership application.
Joined by the dean of the OHSU's School of Dentistry and ODA volunteers, fourth year dental students came together for a lunch and learn about tripartite membership. Vanessa Browne, DDS shared her personal ODA and ADA story with over two thirds of the fourth year class. Highlighting the unique benefits of tripartite membership and the collegiality found within organized dentistry, Dr. Browne fielded questions about tripartite endorsed programs and continuing education opportunities. In less than an hour, 81% of the OHSU 2015 graduating class completed applications with the remainder coming in soon after.
Attendees left with a better understanding of tripartite membership and an excitement to be a part of organized dentistry throughout their careers.
Volunteers and Staff Convene to Advance the Power of Three
More than 180 dental society volunteers and staff gathered at ADA Headquarters to learn together and share ideas and insights on recruiting and retaining members. ADA President Dr. Maxine Feinberg opened the Conference by underscoring that “membership is everyone’s business.” Then Council on Membership chair, Dr. Michael Durbin, followed by facilitating an action-oriented program focusing on innovation, collaboration and the measurement of success.
The agenda included a presentation on preparing to welcome the new face of dentistry by Professor Russell Walker from the Kellogg School of Management, Northwestern University. Also, the Florida Dental Association shared membership building experiences during a “little PARTS of a BIGGER STRATEGY” session. And Conference workshops covered the gamut from data analysis to making an emotional connection to membership.

Submit copies of National Signing Day applications to the ADA!
We’re more than halfway through the National Signing Day season, and the process of converting new graduates into active ADA membership is beginning!
If you held a National Signing Day event this year, please send a copy of each application you collected to the ADA Office of Student Affairs by May 15. If you worked with the ASDA Chapter at the dental school where your event was held, please let us know – they can earn up to $500 for participating!
The ADA uses the copies of applications to track participation in the National Signing Day program, and to inform you of new graduates moving into your state. For example, if a fourth-year student in New York indicates on her application that she is moving to Pennsylvania, we will share that information with Pennsylvania, and send them a copy of her application. So please send us copies of your applications – sharing this information benefits everyone!
If you have any questions, please contact your Membership Outreach Manager.
