Letters: Member Use

November 19, 2012

A church holds services on Sunday. According to the ADA's logic, it should be closed for having its members use it only 14.3 percent of the time.

I, as a member of the ADA, have held some expectations of the organization. I believe it to be our profession's home base for dental information. How can that be when it wants to "chuck" the Library?

I urge that ADA leadership rethink its position.

Editor's note: The ADA is indeed changing some services of the ADA Library. Reference services and journal article delivery are expected to continue; however, as the staff will be reduced by more than half, response time may take longer. Walk-in member use and book purchases and loans are services that will sunset at the end of 2012. In addition, journal subscriptions in 2013 are likely to be cut by 20-25 percent. To meet members' ongoing information needs, the ADA will explore the cost of licensing digital resources for member access. Updates on library services will be reported to members in 2013.
