Professions seek to address dentistry, dental hygiene licensure portability
Association members, dental hygienists, dentistry and dental hygiene regulators and other industry stakeholders are invited to a kickoff meeting of a new partnership supporting the expanded mobility of licensed dentists and dental hygienists.
The ADA is partnering with the Council of State Governments, the Department of Defense and the American Dental Hygienists Association to develop model legislation for interstate licensure compacts that will create reciprocity among participant states to reduce the barriers to license portability and employment.
The Council of State Governments will host a kickoff meeting to launch the initiative on Aug. 24 at 2 p.m. EST via Zoom. Leaders, subject matter experts and members of the dentistry and dental hygiene professions will discuss the future of dental profession licensure and mobility.
Participants will learn about the background and aspirations for the project; the form and function of intestate licensure compacts and the compact development process; and the need for license reciprocity in the dentistry and dental hygiene professions.
According to the ADA Health Policy Institute, about one in 13 dentists moved to a different state between 2015 and 2020. Among dentists aged 40 or younger, about one in six migrated across state lines during this period. To continue practicing dentistry, each must obtain a new state license, which includes significant financial resources and time submitting extensive documentation required for licensure by credentials. Some dentists are required to retake a procedure-based patient clinical exam.
