Loan forgiveness tool now available

Oct. 31 deadline to apply for waiver

The U.S. Department of Education has created a Public Service Loan Forgiveness Help Tool to help individuals with student loans determine whether they work for a qualifying employer for the Public Service Loan Forgiveness program or Temporary Expanded Public Service Loan Forgiveness programs.

Last year, the U.S. Department of Education announced a change to Public Service Loan Forgiveness program rules for a limited time as a result of the COVID-19 emergency. The temporary changes expires on Oct. 31. During this limited time, borrowers may receive credit for past periods of repayment that would otherwise not qualify for PSLF, according to a news release .

The newly-modified Public Service Loan Forgiveness Help Tool can also assist borrowers — including dentists — with actions they can take to become eligible for Public Service Loan Forgiveness. It also guides them through the Public Service Loan Forgiveness form and submission process.

To get the most accurate information, dentists are advised to carefully read any section titled "Special Notice for the COVID-19 Emergency" and check out the limited PSLF waiver announcement.
