Conference Information

The ADA, in collaboration with the Task Force on Design and Analysis in Oral Health Research, is hosting a conference with the overarching goal to explore ways that help guarantee that dentists routinely employ the best evidence in support of clinical decision making and practice behaviors.

The conference will address four issues:

  • In view of periodic questioning by a variety of groups about the credibility and generalizability of industry-sponsored research, there is a need to discuss in detail and clarify the nature of the relationship between funding sources and investigators to determine if such questions are warranted.
  • Dentists, as well as some academicians, are often not aware of the various safeguards that are in place to help assure the validity of clinical trial outcomes.
  • What methods and strategies are effective for disseminating information so that dentists can become informed and confident consumers of the scientific literature and view the scientific literature as a valid method to inform clinical practice.
  • What methods are effective for implementing clinical practice guidelines in dental practice settings.

This conference will bring together expert researchers, clinicians, academicians and stakeholders from dentistry including Dr. Martha Somerman, director of the National Institute of Dental and Craniofacial Research; Dr. Alonso Carrasco Labra, director of the ADA Center for Evidence-Based Dentistry; Dr. Christopher Fox, Ph.D., director of the International Association for Dental Research, Dr. Robert Weyant, professor and chair of the department of dental public health at the University of Pittsburgh and Dr. Steven Offenbacher distinguished professor and chair of the department of periodontology at the University of North Carolina.
