Dental Licensure by State Map

COVID-19 Updates Related to Licensure:

  • The state dental board is the appropriate agency to contact for the most current and up-to-date information about licensure requirements during this time.
  • The Joint Commission on National Dental Examinations website provides current information on national dental and dental hygiene examinations, test administration eligibility windows and testing centers.
  • The clinical testing agency websites provide updates on pending and future clinical examination schedules.
Access the Dental Licensure Map

The Dental Licensure Map is below and available to use.

The ADA attempts to keep the Dental Licensure Map information current based on information from state dental boards, clinical testing agencies and state dental associations. Individuals seeking dental licensure are strongly urged to consult with the respective state board of dentistry for additional information in addition to using the Dental Licensure Map.

Select or hover over a state on the Dental Licensure Map and see which exams or pathways are accepted for initial licensure.

Looking for information about continuing education requirements, licensure by credentials, or specialty licensure information?  Find it in the table below the map.  Select the state you’re interested in and download the PDF with detailed licensure information or link directly to the state dental board.

Definitions and explanations of licensure pathways and abbreviations (e.g., ADEX, CIF exams, PGY1, OSCE) used on the map can be found on the Licensure Pathways page.
