Admission Tests and Dental Exams

Click the blue box and check back daily for new information. Important updates for all testing candidates regarding COVID-19

The Department of Testing Services (DTS) is a shared service of the American Dental Association (ADA) that provides professional psychometric and test development services for high stakes testing programs in dentistry and healthcare.  DTS develops and implements licensure and admission testing programs under the purview of the Joint Commission on National Dental Examinations (JCNDE), the ADA Board of Trustees, the ADA Council on Dental Education and Licensure (CDEL), and the Association of Schools and Colleges of Optometry (ASCO). Choose an exam below.

  • The JCNDE oversees the National Board Dental Examinations (NBDE Part I and Part II) and the National Board Dental Hygiene Examination (NBDHE).  The Integrated National Board Dental Examination (INBDE) is currently under development.
  • CDEL oversees the Dental Admission Test (DAT) and the Advanced Dental Admission Test (ADAT) for admission into dental and advanced dental education programs, respectively.
  • ASCO oversees the Optometry Admission Test (OAT) for admission into optometry education programs.
  • The Dental Licensure Objective Structured Clinical Examination (DLOSCE) is being developed and overseen by the ADA Board of Trustees through its DLOSCE Steering Committee.

Each of the examination programs rely heavily on dedicated teams of highly qualified volunteers who provide the necessary content expertise to help ensure that each examination is valid and reliable, in accordance with professional standards. These volunteer test constructors develop test questions that are clear, accurate, and support the purpose of the corresponding testing program. On behalf of the governing bodies noted above, DTS seeks qualified subject matter experts who are willing to serve as Test Constructors.

Additionally, there is an ongoing need for patient images for use within examination programs such as the National Board Dental Examinations. These materials are extremely valuable for assessing examinee knowledge and problem solving skills.
