Letters: ADSO commitment to ADA ethics

March 16, 2015 In regard to the Jan. 19 ADA News article “Practice Support Association Affirms Commitment to ADA Ethics Code,” I would have more confidence in the Association of Dental Support Organizations members’ commitment to the ADA Principles of Ethics and Code of Professional Conduct if they also made a commitment to pay their dentist/employees’ ADA dues as a part of their employment benefit package.

In addition, their biggest commitment to ethics could be cessation of their lobbying efforts to overturn state laws that ban anyone but a dentist from owning a dental practice (solo or group practice). Interviews with past employees of DSOs reveal massive interference with “dentists’ clinical decisions in dental practice.”

If their lobbying effort is successful, it would create dental clinics that do not put the patient first but put investors’ corporate profits first. Overtreatment would be rampant and treatment plan tragedies would be beyond the state dental board’s reach.
