Contacts and Connections - February 2015
SPOTLIGHT: Arizona Dental Association
Video: ADA Message to New Member Dentists – Great to use at student events or to post on society webpages and social media outlets!
To explore opportunities for streamlining the transition of dental students into membership, as well as enhancing value messaging to this group during the transition process, ADA staff convened a workgroup with the Arizona Dental Association and its local components through a Power of Three Collaboration.
As part of the test, the Arizona Dental Association produced a video encouraging new graduates to join the American Dental Association. Arizona tested the video with key groups of its dental student market and the messaging was well received.
As part of Power of Three, the video is being made available to state and local dental societies for use with their new dentist recruitment and retention outreach efforts.
Kudos to the AzDA Producer/Director and Manager of Communications, Jeremy Tuber, the AzDA Team members, and to the star, new member Dr. Tal Masserman!

Member-Get-A-Member Returns in 2015
Most ADA members say they would recommend membership to colleagues. And in 2015 they’ll have another opportunity. The Member-Get-A-Member program recruited 119 new members in 2013, and 152 in 2014; just imagine what can happen in 2015!
Eligible recruiters will be rewarded with a $100 gift card for each new, active member recruited (up to five members or $500 in gift cards)! Or recruiters may decline the incentive and ADA will contribute $100 to the ADA Foundation. Please see Campaign Rules for full details at ADA.org/MGAM.
A Look at 2014 End-of-Year Membership Results
The ADA ended 2014 with 127,910 active members, as compared to 128,726 in 2013. Despite the decrease in both members and market share, the number of active licensed dentists increased in several key membership segments, including women, new dentists, and graduate students. While there were increases in some membership segments, we also experienced decreases in others, including specialists, federal dentists and general practitioners. Another factor that plays into the market share calculation is total market size. In 2014, the total market of active-license dentists was 198,214, an increase of 1,541 or eight-tenths of a percent over the same time in 2013.
Based on the results, our main challenge continues to be retention. The nonrenew rate of all active-license members increased by two tenths of a percentage point to 5.9%.In 2014, there were 5,244 new/reinstated members, slightly behind the same time in 2013 when there were 5,525 new/reinstated members. Programs like the 2014 quarter year $0 dues program had a positive impact on end-of-year numbers: a total of 1,012 dentists joined at the quarter year rate, up by 4% over 2013. From analysis of past results, about 63% of those who join at the $0 rate will retain their membership the following year, so it’s important to do everything we can to retain these new members in 2015.

Recognize a Member’s International Volunteer Service
Applications are due April 1 for the Certificate for International Volunteer. This program recognizes ADA members who have volunteered in developing countries to improve the oral health and overall health of individuals. Eligibility requirements include serving in an international location with a program sponsored by a dental school or recognized nonprofit organization for a minimum of 14 days, either in one period or in several visits, in any 24-month period. Members must be nominated by a component or constituent society, federal dental service or dental school. Students are also eligible to apply. Full eligibility information and the application can be found on the ADA’s website: Click here.
Celebrate World Oral Health Day, March 20
Make plans now to participate in World Oral Health Day (WOHD). Held annually on March 20, it’s an international day to raise awareness for practicing good oral health. This year’s theme is “Smiles for Life” to highlight the importance of oral hygiene for all ages. If an event is already planned in your city or state, this can easily be themed as a WOHD event. The ADA has collaborated with the FDI World Dental Federation to create a poster in promotion of the day, and additional materials are available on the WOHD website.
Customer Service Tip
The admonition to “Listen Louder!” is hardly new. However, its wisdom “shouts” at us to at least sometimes detach from texts, tweets and the like.
And one of those times is when we serve a customer. Great customer service requires great listening and fully focusing on our customer’s questions and needs.
When we give our customer our undivided attention, we’re saying that our customer is very important.
Moreover, a “listening loud” culture says a lot about an organization’s commitment to service and providing value.
